Your Name in Lights!

March 9th, 2010

We had the opportunity to play around with our newest toys for our lighted monogram projection services during Giavonna’s Banquet Hall’s March Bridal Tour this past Saturday!  We have three great projection methods to choose from, including glass gobos in monochrome or color, steel gobos, and digital projection.  Here’s a look at each of those projection methods and how they compare, as well as some photos to inspire you!  As always, design services for any method of projection are complimentary.  We’ll incorporate your wedding colors, theme, and even the fonts you used on your wedding stationary!

STEEL GOBO PROJECTION

Steel gobos are small metal discs custom-cut to your design and used as a lens to direct the beam of light from a a high-powered theatrical lighting instrument.

Steel gobo design

Steel gobo projection is the most common method of manipulating light patterns used in professional theatres and offers a very bright, crisp, highly legible projection image for short text phrases, such as your initials, names, or wedding date, as well as limited background designs.  Steel gobos are cut in a tabbed design, like a stencil and project a single color and tone of light, which can be selected from a nearly limitless number of colors of gels.  Couples using steel gobo projection will be offered their custom steel gobo as a unique keepsake!
.
GLASS GOBO PROJECTION
.
Similarly, glass gobos are small discs used in conjunction with a high-powered theatrical lighting instrument, but glass gobos are made of layers of dichroic glass rather than steel.

Design for a one-color glass gobo

One-color glass gobo projection on a dance floor

Glass gobos provide the same crisp, bright, easy-to-read projection image, with greater design latitude to your image, and the ability to incorporate colors into your design — as much and as many as you like!

Two-color glass gobo design

Two-color glass gobo projection on a dance floor

Whereas steel gobos require a tabbed design and can cast only a single-color projection, glass gobos are available in monochrome or multi-colored designs, and offer an improvement above the more common steel gobos by allowing free-formed design not restricted by tabs.  Glass gobos are also more durable than steel gobos, so if you’re thinking of using the gobo, again, at an anniversary party in the future, etc., choose glass.  Brides and grooms using steel gobos using glass gobo projection will also be offered their custom glass gobo as a unique keepsake!

DIGITAL PROJECTION

Like glass gobos, digital projection offers a nearly limitless amount of colors, but unlike either gobo projection method, digital projection does not require the costly production of a custom steel or glass disc and is inherently more inexpensive.

Digital projection also offers the ability to scroll between multiple images, but it is not as high-powered as the traditional methods and some designs may be more difficult to read on darker surfaces.

MORE FUN IDEAS

After your first dance, you can choose to keep the projection on the dance floor, or, move it to the wall or ceiling!

Something New is HOT, HOT, HOT LIST-ed!

March 8th, 2010

Check Something New Entertainment out on the HOT LIST!

We are pleased and humbled to announce that Something New Entertainment is a nominee for Best DJ in the Wedding category of the 2010 Best of the Akron-Canton HOT LIST!!!

After last October’s unexpected Beacon’s Best nod, (which we didn’t even know we’d been nominated for until we got the congratulatory call from the Beacon-Journal), we thought it might be a good idea to let everyone know about this one!  Though it’s exciting that we were able to become one of the Beacon’s Best without campaigning, you know us; we’re not the complacent sort!  We are fortunate to have you guys, and we’ll never forget it!

We are, again, competing against some of the larger companies in town, only hoping that the satisfaction and enthusiasm of our loyal past and current clients will outweigh our smaller size.  As you may know, DJ AJ9 is extremely selective about staffing, and so that we can devote the time, energy, and manpower to each wedding that it deserves, we take a maximum of three bookings each Saturday — less if we have a particularly large engagement.

On behalf of the entire staff here at Something New Entertainment, I’d like to ask you for your vote for Best DJ.  Would you take a moment to show your support by visiting the Fox 8 site to vote for us and by asking your friends and family to do the same?

Voting begins March, 15, 2010 as soon as the clock strikes midnight on the Fox 8 HOT LIST site.  Remember: a recommendation is not the same as a vote, but we do really appreciate both!

Stake Your Claim on the Dance Floor! Lighted Monograms for Every Budget!

March 3rd, 2010

Looking for a little extra sparkle to add that personal touch to your venue?  Maybe you’re working with a monogram theme, or maybe you just want to make sure your guests remember whose wedding reception they’re at!  Good news!  Beginning this season, Something New Entertainment Bridal DJ Service will be offering a new and romantic way to make your mark.

Glass Gobo Projection. Source: WeddingAces

In addition to providing highly-personalized custom disc jockey entertainment, master of ceremonies services, dance and party lighting, ceremony music, and multimedia memory slide show presentations for weddings, parties, and corporate events around Northeast Ohio, we are now able to add a more affordable option for custom projection to display your monogram (or other moniker, logo, etc.) on your dance floor in lights as an optional addition to our existing lighting package!  It’s a breathtaking and memorable addition to your first dance and a great way to create brand recognition at your corporate event!

We have always offered this service (and will continue to do so) in its most traditional form – a custom steel gobo for black-and-white or a custom glass gobo for color paired with a high-intensity theatrical stage light.  A gobo is a small, steel or glass disk that focuses and/or colors the projection of light into your intended shape.  Though “stock” or pre-made standard gobos are available commercially for basic patterns as might be used in a theatrical setting to simulate light coming through a window or the shadow of a tree, personalized gobos are individually crafted to suit your style including your names or initials, preferred fonts and embellishments, and, in the case of glass gobos, colors.

Steel gobos are designed in a “tabbed” format and can also be projected through a gel to produce a one-color projection.

Gels come in nearly every color you can imagine!

These options will still be available for those wanting a higher-powered, crisper projection.  However, because of the cost involved in production of the gobos themselves, these options are inherently more expensive, and many brides and grooms have requested a lower-cost alternative.  For that reason, lighted monograms will now also be available via digital projection using a powerful, high-lumen multimedia projector.

Digital Projection. Source: Music by Mike

While not as bright as a the pricier method, digital projection offers a wider variety of design choices and will not require the costly production of custom gobo or an additional charge for color.  For smaller, more intimate settings, the lower lumen output provides a better option than traditional stage lighting, since the intense beam of light can travel less distance to project a smaller brand.

Digital Projection. Source: Boston Uplights

No matter which projection method you choose, design services are always complimentary.  We will work carefully with you to make sure you get the shape you want and consider the colors you choose for your monogram, since the color of your projection canvas and the amount of ambient light in your venue affects the delicate balance of light and color.

For more information or if you are interested in adding projection services to your existing engagement, please contact DJ AJ9 via email or phone at 330-253-2900!  If lighting is something that catches your eye, stay tuned!  We will soon be offering extended lighting options in easier-to-understand packages including our architectural lighting and uplighting services!

Green Your Wedding — Green Your Life! High Mill Park; A Green Site

March 2nd, 2010

Looking for a unique way to add a little “green” to your wedding?  Start with your site!  Check out High Mill Park in Massillon, OH.  Located about half an hour south of Akron, High Mill Park is a functioning organic farm operating sustainably in a serene and natural setting that hosts beautiful fêtes of all kinds on their fourteen acre plot.  The farm is home to a wide variety of livestock — including sheep, chickens, geese, goats, and more — as well as fruit and vegetable crops and lush gardens of flowers and flowering trees.  The farm produces meatfruits, vegetables, and herbs for sale locally as a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture).  Buying and supporting Ohio farms keeps dollars in the local community and reduces the pollution caused by shipping food from across the country.

.

..

You won’t have to worry about chemical weed killers or pesticides at High Mill Park — they don’t use them!  All wedding packages come with recycling and composting services for party waste, and there are a variety of green upgrade options to choose from, including vintage repurposed plates and linens to reduce paper waste, LED lighting to conserve energy, as well as seasonal table decorations and wedding favors.  Based on the time of year or your wedding colors, you guests could enjoy baskets of fresh-picked wildflowers, colorful heirloom tomatoes, potted flowers, or organic apples!
.
High Mill Park is glad to accommodate outside help, working closely with guest rental companies, catering staff, and licensed bartenders to ensure a smooth-running event, and can provide stainless steel buffets, if needed.
.
.
High Mill Park has two unique sites for your event, perfect for both large and small gatherings; however, whichever site you choose to use, the rest of the park will not be rented to anyone else on that day, to ensure privacy for your special day.  The first, a renovated barn, holds approximately 80 people and features a rustic barn wood surround with a clean cement floor, opening out to a fire ring near the surrounding woodland.  It is seated about halfway up the hill and has a beautiful view of nearby lakes.
.
.
The second, larger site is a pavilion-style structure with a capacity of approximately 200 guests.  The pavilion borders a private stream on one side, woodland on the other side, a nearby volleyball court, and a fire ring.  Refrigerators are available for this area.  Both sites have electricity, lighting, and access to the restrooms.

The 411 on 831 Photography; Photojournalism, Personalization, and Philanthropy

February 3rd, 2010
The staff at 831 Photography is very much of the opinion that “to whom much is givenmuch is expected” (Luke 12:48).  Eight Three One photographer and co-founder Stephanie Swarts Smith puts it best: ”In general,” she says, “I feel that we are blessed. We get to follow our passion and do what we love. It is hard to call what we do our ‘job’ because we do love it. We have also been blessed with great clients. The people we get to work with are wonderful and make our job a lot of fun. And we have been blessed in having great families, homes to live in, food on the table and a great team of people to work with. These days, that is a lot to be thankful for!”
.
That thankfulness has inspired them to give back.  Now, in addition to receiving first-class service and breathtaking photographic memories from 831, you can support their efforts to give back, as well.  January 2010 marked the inaugural month of 831 Photography’s “Philanthropy Project,” devoting 5% of each month’s sales revenue to a new charity cause.  ”I have been given the chance to follow my dream and people hire me to do what I love. I want to give back to those that haven’t had that chance yet,” says Stephanie.
.
This month, 831 focuses their intent towards another cause very dear to their hearts — relief efforts after the devastation of the earthquake in Haiti.  This dedication is inspired in part by Stephanie’s very personal tie to the Port-au-Prince region through a high school friend.  After being touched by facebook status updates from a high school friend during his trials as the Christian School he taught at was converted into an emergency hospital/shelter/storage facility, Stephanie wanted to help.  She wished she could pick up her camera and go — to offer assistance, as well as photojournalistic documentation of the trials being faced by those who had lost their jobs, homes, families — whole lives — to the disaster.  However, Stephanie, like the rest of us, had obligations: “Seeing the devastation in Haiti breaks my heart, so if there is something that I can do to help, I want to do it. If I had the means, I would jump on a plane with my camera in hand and go help, but the best I can do for Haiti right now is to help raise funds to help them rebuild.”
.
Fortunately, the school did resume classes this past week, but many Haitians are still struggling to obtain basic necessities such as food, clothing, shelter, clean water, bedding, and hygiene and disease control supplies.   Many charities are also providing psychological and social support services
during this difficult time.
.
Last month’s cause — breast cancer research — is also a cause very close to Stephanie’s heart.  In addition to having several friends and family members who have battled breast cancer, she herself had a scare with breast cancer just six years ago when her first son was just over a year old.  ”I ended up having a biopsy and everything turned out to be okay, but it was terrifying.  Here I was, a normal 28-year-old Mom, terrified that I might not live to see my baby grow up.”  Eight Three One donated a total of $2,107.50 by month’s end.

Eight Three One is accepting nominations for future recipients of donations.  Stephanie’s time serving on missions abroad in the Dominican Republic changed her life and how she sees other countries and cultures, and they want to know what you think, too!   ”We would love to hear what causes and organizations are close to people’s hearts,” says Stephanie. “This is an ongoing project!”

To further contribute to the Haitian Relief Effort, 831 is offering an additional incentive to book during the month of February. Book an eight-hour or longer engagement with a single photographer for your wedding and get a second shooter at your event FREE (a $700 value!). A second photographer is a great way to capture your special moments from more than one point-of-view — for example the bride walking up the aisle taken from the front of the chapel (the groom’s point-of-view) or the back of the bride’s dress as she makes her way down the aisle.  Having a second photographer allows your photographers to capture these moments in true photojournalistic style, even though they may be occurring simultaneously.

In addition to a free second photographer and the good feeling that comes from supporting a worthy cause, all 831 packages come with digital rights release for personal printing, plus the support of a caring staff of enthusiastic and talented professional.  ”Our team helps us to give our clients the attention they deserve!”  In addition to Stephanie, 831 has two other owner-photographers — Shannon Smith (Stephanie’s husband) and Callie Mercury — as well as several associate photographers, a business manager (Stacy — call and ask her all your questions.  She’s great!), several cinematographers, a dedicated sales staff, and an album designer who works directly with brides and grooms to ensure that their wedding album is exactly what they want.

Eight Three One’s photographers cover a wide range of photographic styles, including fine art, photojournalistic, and traditional.  Like our Disc Jockeys, 831 photographers spend time getting to know you as clients and as people to get a better feel for what will work best for you and your wedding.  Each of 831’s three senior photographers has a photojournalistic background, with special talents in three different areas.  Stephanie explains: “I am the capturer, the most journalistic of the group… Callie is our creator. She is extremely talented in creating moments that look as though they happened that way. Shan is our innovator. He is always staying on the cutting edge of technology and does amazing things with off camera lighting… I try to match clients up with someone whom I think they will work well with. Then the client and the photographer get to know each other during the engagement session.”

Eight Three One shares Something New DJ’s commitment to our planet, as well.  Go green!  Online wedding galleries and wedding DVD proofs instead of paper wedding contact sheets, online calendar and contact management, and an online wedding contract process utilizing an electronic signature are just a few of the ways that 831 is reducing their impact on the environment as a green Northeast Ohio wedding provider.

Why Hire a Professional DJ?

January 23rd, 2010

With today’s economy, many couples are looking for ways to save money on their wedding.  You may be wondering to yourself “why spend hundreds of dollars to hire a professional company when my friend, a DJ from an online classified ad, or an MP3 player can do the same thing for less?”  But, remember: like choosing a photographer, dress designer, or cake artist, hiring a DJ is not always an “apples to apples” comparison.  While you might pay less for the services of an amateur entertainer, you may not be buying an equivalent product.  Differences in quality and style can make a very big difference.  The abilities of your DJ selection can determine how enjoyable your reception is for yourself and your guests — whether your dance floor stays packed all night long or whether everyone leaves by 9:00 P.M.

While it is certainly true that, like higher-quality photographers, dress designers, and cake artists, a professional DJ company may not be your lowest bidder, here are a few good reasons to choose one anyway:

  • Experience: how much experience does the person operating the sound equipment have, not only with the equipment itself, but with public speaking, crowd control, and problem solving?  Even using professional-grade equipment, an amateur DJ may not have sufficient knowledge to effectively use all those knobs and buttons to their best advantage.  The resulting sound may not be much better than your boom box.  Something New DJ/MCs complete a rigorous apprentice program with a written curriculum emphasizing not only how to use the equipment effectively but how to evaluate acoustics, “read” the crowd to keep them dancing, speak with good diction, be tactful with guests, and anticipate the needs of the bridal party.
  • Peace of Mind and Good Memories: what do you want to remember most about your reception?  Worrying whether your caterer knows it’s time to pour the champagne or if your photographer knows it’s time to cut the cake?  Coordinating your reception instead of dancing?  Cheesy announcements?  Cueing and re-cueing the MP3 player?  Listening to songs you don’t particularly like or maybe have never heard?  Hiring a professional DJ company allows you to relax and actually enjoy the party you’ve spent so much time planning.  Something New even schedules planning with your actual DJ!
  • Reliability: what will happen if your friend or amateur DJ develops an illness, equipment failure, or transportation problem?  With a professional company, replacement equipment and additional staff should be readily available.  Something New DJs work in pairs and have backup equipment on-site.
  • Equipment: is the stereo setup able to produce high-quality sound sufficient to fill your reception hall but still sensitive enough to prevent the music from blaring or becoming distorted?  Do you need a microphone for toasts or other events?  A professional DJ company will utilize specialized equipment designed to fill a large hall without distortion and will have microphones available for speeches and announcements.  Something New also provides a wireless microphone for toasts.
  • Etiquette (Professionalism): how will your DJ dress?  Will your DJ adhere to your “must play” and “do not play” lists?  Will your DJ be set up early and ready when the guests arrive, or still be loading in at the beginning of dinner?  Something New DJs partner with you in planning, paying careful attention to your musical preferences.  We arrive early and dress appropriately for your event, according to your preferences, typically in tuxedos or other black-tie eveningwear.
  • Music Variety: will your DJ have access to all your favorites?  What about newer music?  Professional DJs often have access to new music before it is available for purchase to the general public.  Something New stays up-to-date on the latest music.  If you’ve heard it on the radio, chances are we have it in our library, and if we don’t, we’ll try to get it for you.

If you are very brave, you can watch this video courtesy of the American Disc Jockey Association entitled “iPod Wedding Disaster”… While not exactly a “disaster,” I warn you — it’s not pretty.  The excitement — or lack thereof — starts about 1:50 in.  It points out — “You have worked countless hours and spent thousands of dollars on decorations, food, beverages, flowers, etc.  But if your guests leave early, how will they ever enjoy your hard work?”

With 81%** of wedding guests surveyed in a national poll saying that the thing they remember most about a wedding is the entertainment, the quality and style of the entertainer you choose can very dramatically influence the enjoyability of your evening for both you and your guests.   Certainly something to think about when debating whether to splurge on chair covers or entertainment.

The Northeast Ohio Bride is incredibly fortunate to have so many excellent choices of reputable DJ companies to choose from — through Akron, Canton, and Cleveland, there are are a number of high-quality professionals out there.  All you have to do is find the one that fits best for you and your fiance!  If you’re ready to take your wedding “a step above the same old,” contact Something New today!  Please give us a call at 330-253-2900.

Whiskey’s Idol Challenge

January 20th, 2010

We had a great time last night down at Whiskey’s located at 1 West Exchange Street in Akron hosting the first in their series of singing/performance competitions held 10:00 PM – 2:00 AM each Tuesday evening.  The Idol Challenge is great opportunity to win notoriety, prizes, and, of course, bragging rights!  Plus, enjoy great dollar drink specials including rum and coke, flavored vodka, and WD drafts!

With stellar performances from a number of awesome singers, including Whiskey’s own DJ Dan and some of the guys from Ark Peninsula who gave an energetic performance of ‘N Sync’s “Bye Bye Bye,” with surprisingly in sync (couldn’t resist) improvisational dance moves.

For more hilarity or great vocals, respectively, check out DJ Dan at Whiskey’s Comedy Night Open Mic this evening (Wednesday, January 20, 2010) as well as Akron’s best local comedians or February 3, 2010 featuring headliner Ryan Dalton  or catch Ark Peninsula February 13, 2010 at the Robin Hood Bar and Grille in Kent.

We also had an absolutely rockin’ version of “Wannabe” by the Spice Girls by five of our lovely ladies:

A performance by a lovely birthday girl!

With so many great singers, it was difficult to choose a winner!

Ultimately, it was Meghan who took home the prize with her stunning and soulful rendition of Mariah Carey’s “Vision of Love” — a generous Whiskey’s gift certificate!  It was a very challenging song, and Meghan really nailed it to the wall!  She had everyone in the club up on their feet cheering.  Congratulations, Meghan, on your great talent and showmanship!

Bridal Tour at Giavonna’s

January 17th, 2010

Giovonna's JustinWe had a great time at the Bridal Tour at Giavonna’s Catering and Banquet Hall yesterday afternoon spinning some tunes, meeting some happy couples, and having an opportunity to taste Chef Frank Espositio’s spectacular authentic Italian fare.  This warm, intimate venue would be especially great for smaller weddings in the 150 guests and under range, but could comfortably seat as many as 180.

Giavonna's Head Table

Giavonna's Head Table Giavonna's Head Table

Giavonna’s had their 740 Munroe Falls Avenue in Cuyahoga Falls banquet hall set up formally with several different (example) colors of linens displayed — including purple, lavender, pink, and red.  They also included some of their in-stock Eiffel tower vase centerpieces on mirrors to the table dressings, leaving a very clean, open, and uncluttered feel — an advantage especially if you have additional items you want to incorporate into your table settings, such as placecards, table numbers, favors, etc.

Giavonna's Colored Linens

The decor of their hall is also neutral enough to accommodate many themes easily.  We are currently working with a a bride planning a Halloween wedding at this location (think “fun kids/family party” in green, orange, and purple), and though many venues have too strong of background decor to accommodate this kind of theme, we think it’s going to be particularly fantastic at Giavonna’s.  Plus, check out their cool little adjoining lounge:

We also had the opportunity to spend some time browsing the beautiful Beadtini Boutique collection of necklaces, earrings, and more.  You might already recognize one of their Swarovski crystal necklaces; it was featured on the cover of last Spring’s Today’s Bride Magazine.

Beadtini Today' Bride Cover tbapril2009

Beadtini Boutique offers beads and beading supplies, beading and bead-making classes, and a great workspace, as well as pre-made and custom-made beaded jewelry.  They do “Girl’s Night Out” parties, bridesmaids’ gifts, bridal jewelry, or even gorgeous adornments for your bouquet!  Jennie, one of the owners, told me that one bride created bouquet adornments for her wedding day, and then after the wedding, made memory jewelry out of them for her mother and mother-in-law.  What a great gift idea!

Beadtini Necklace Beadtini Collection

They carry a wide variety of beads — glass, as well as Swarovski crystals, semi-precious stones, and freshwater pearls.  You can DIY or HTDIFY — that’s “Have Them Do It For You” ;) — either way, you’ll get a unique piece made to suit your style.

Accurate Limousines Accurate Limousines

Driving towards Giavonna’s we saw two GIANT stretch Cadillac Escalade limousines.  We were kind of wondering who was in them and where in the WORLD they would be going at 10:30 AM on a Sunday — then we noticed them turning into the parking lot in front of us!  These beauties are available through Accurate Limousines, and will definitely turn some heads!

Now — I know what you may be thinking: “I thought your blog was partially dedicated to GREEN ideas, AJ9!  Is an SUV limo really GREEN?”  Well, the answer is: maybe!  Chew on this:  SUV limos get between 9 and 17 MPG, and while that may not seem like much, consider that the limo’s passenger capacity is four to six times that of your car.  Translation: if it’s just you and your groom all by your lonesome in the back of that big ol’ limo, probably not so green, but put your whole bridal party in there, and you may actually be saving some emissions!

Here’s the math: you and your groom each have four attendants. Likely, you’re looking at at least 5-6 cars you would be using to transport those 10 people.  Even at 40MPG in each of those 5-6 cars, you’re effectively getting 7-8 MPG for the group, so the limo would actually be better that 5 hybrids.  It’s something to think about — plus you’ve get free champagne upon request and a designated driver.

For those of you who were not able to make it down to Giavonna’s yesterday — check out their all-you-can-eat pasta, salad, and breadsticks deal Wednesday evenings from 5:00PM – 7:00 PM for only seven bucks ($7).  We’ll definitely be down there this week!  Yum!
