Event Review: Walk It, Win It, End It; Something New Entertainment Honored by Breast Cancer Coalition Charity with Award for Service, June 19, 2010

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Last weekend, we had the honor of providing disc jockey entertainment and sound support for a cause very close to our hearts (both literally and figuratively!) for a pair of charity events to benefit the Northern Ohio Breast Cancer Coalition Fund (NOBCCF), a  not-for-profit organization dedicated to the empowerment of survivors of breast cancer and to improving access to and awareness of treatment and prevention measures in hopes of eradicating breast cancer.  Founded in 2000, NOBCCF programs are led by breast cancer survivors, promoting the importance of awareness and early detection, and acting as advocates for patients, encouraging research, screening, treatment, and education.

We kicked off the weekend with a high-energy Dance Cruise aboard the Goodtime III to celebrate the past accomplishments of the NOBCCF and in breast cancer research.  DJ Triple D was spinning on the ones and twos, covering a variety of genres of music including party favorites and lots of current Top 40, hip-hop, and urban tracks.  It was a hopping party that came just short of rocking the boat, LOL!

The next morning, we gathered together, again, at Gordon Park near Lakeside in Cleveland for an energizing 5K walk dedicated to fundraising and awareness.  Some 200 woman and men turned out to pledge their morning to this cause, which lasted about three and a half hours from 8:00AM to 11:30AM.  The walk was actually scheduled to last longer, in anticipation of slower walkers -- but you guys were real speed demons!  Participants finished the walk a full hour ahead of schedule.  Let's hope that this 5K walk is just the first step in a series of life-changing healthy decisions.  Cheers to all who participated.

We were honored with a service award for our services donation and received a beautiful plaque.

Both events were presented by Cleveland City Councilman Kevin Conwell, the Cleveland City Council, the City of Cleveland, LifeSkills Center, HOPE Academy, and the Cleveland Department of Public Health.  Health Commissioner Karen Butler was in attendance (she's standing next to Justin in the photo) and personally participated in the walk, leading the way.  The event was organized by Committee Chairwoman Dr. Necia Boone (2nd from the left, above), Co-Chairwoman Yvonne Conwell, and Liz Schulte from NOBCCF.

This event was also sponsored by the Goodtime III excursion ship, 93.1 WZAK FM Radio, The Cleveland Call and Post Newspaper, Boone Enterprises, Gas USA, Inc., and the Glenville Titans, with special thanks extended to Cleveland City Council Executive Assistant Paulla Ireland, City of Cleveland Graphic Designer and owner of Gimmie Graphics, Tiffaney Beasley, Freelance Marketin/Design Consultant Tom Secrest, and S Group Promotional Product's Jim Holy.

For more information about how to contribute to this worthy cause, either financially or with the donation of your time, please visit NOBCC or call 440-717-9912.

Our Mission

The Northern Ohio Breast Cancer Coalition Fund (NOBCCF) is a member of the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC). We are an organization formed and led by breast cancer survivors. Our goal is to eradicate breast cancer by leading the effort to focus our communities, research institutions, the news media and consumer advocates on breast cancer. Like NBCC, the Northern Ohio Breast Cancer Coalition Fund works to inform, train and direct breast cancer patients and concerned others in knowledgeable and effective patient and research advocacy efforts at all levels. We recognize that the process of curing and eradicating breast cancer involves access to quality health care, patient education and support, improved funding for research as well as consumer awareness. We have an education and advocacy network in the northern Ohio area and work to educate and assist women living with breast cancer to achieve the following goals:

  • To promote research through increased funding, improved research and recruitment and training of scientists
  • To improve access to high-quality screening, diagnosis, treatment and care for all women, particularly the underserved and uninsured, through change in the regulation and delivery of breast health care
  • To facilitate the involvement and influence of those living with breast cancer in the northern Ohio area in improving access to quality health care, support services in the community as well as involvement in aspects of clinical trial design, including access to clinical trials

Something New Entertainment named one of the best DJs on the Fox 8 Akron-Canton HOT LIST!

Check Something New Entertainment out on the HOT LIST!

The masses have spoken, and I'm happy to announce that Something New Entertainment has been named one of the top five best DJs on the Akron-Canton HOT LIST!  Second place --hey -- not too shabby for the underdog!  We're small, but our excellent record of client satisfaction obviously won out over our size.

We were narrowly bested by a larger entertainment company that has been on the Fox 8's Akron-Canton HOT LIST for disc jockeys for much longer than us. At the time that standings were hidden, we trailed them by a only a single percentage point, and since I know several of you who indeed voted after that point, we know  that the DJ competition must have remained very close up until the end! From where I stand, I've got to tell you: it's a tremendous accomplishment!  We are so moved by the loyalty of our past clients, fans, and wedding vendor colleagues.

Looking over the results of this contest, I see representatives of several very, very different styles of DJing, and I can see why each of us has risen to the top of our category, appealing to the select needs of a certain niche of the market.  We look forward to continued excellence, and we feel so privileged to work in a market where we have so many very worthy competitors such as these, since it means that each bride has the opportunity to select a DJ company that best suits her needs and her personality.

Something New's unique mix of interdisciplinary studies in live music and theatrical sound and lighting tech/design and computer engineering paired with a deep belief in the power of music as a driving force and the importance of having a DJ who is personally available to you for consult prior to your event has certainly set us apart in the market as a champion pioneer for comprehensive customer service.  In addition, we believe that our equal opportunity employment practice of encouraging all DJs (including female DJs such as myself) to excel through the same opportunities has afforded us a broader perspective to continually assist our clients in crystallizing their goals for their wedding ceremonies and receptions both musically and through our coordination efforts.

A special congratulations to all nominees, especially the folks at Hats Off Entertainment (1st Place), as well as to the DJ Crew (3rd Place), Beach Boyz Entertainment (4th Place), and DJ Larry's All-Occasion Sound (5th Place).  Good show!

To each and every one of you readers out there, and to your friends, family, and coworkers: thanks for voting.  Your support made this possible!

Something New Entertainment Wedding Disc Jockey Service is HOT, HOT, HOT LIST-ed!

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Check Something New Entertainment out on the HOT LIST!

We are pleased and humbled to announce that Something New Entertainment is a nominee for Best DJ in the Wedding category of the 2010 Best of the Akron-Canton HOT LIST!!!

After last October's unexpected Beacon's Best nod, (which we didn't even know we'd been nominated for until we got the congratulatory call from the Beacon-Journal), we thought it might be a good idea to let everyone know about this one!  Though it's exciting that we were able to become one of the Beacon's Best DJs without campaigning, you know us; we're not the complacent sort!  We are fortunate to have you guys, and we'll never forget it!

We are, again, competing against some of the larger companies in town, only hoping that the satisfaction and enthusiasm of our loyal past and current wedding clients will outweigh our smaller size.  As you may know, DJ AJ9 is extremely selective about staffing, and so that we can devote the time, energy, and manpower to each wedding that it deserves, we take a maximum of three bookings each Saturday -- less if we have a particularly large engagement.

On behalf of the entire staff here at Something New Entertainment Bridal DJ Service, I'd like to ask you for your vote for Best wedding disc jockey on the Akron-Canton Fox 8 HOT LIST.  Would you take a moment to show your support by visiting the Fox 8 site to vote for us and by asking your friends and family to do the same?

Voting begins March, 15, 2010 as soon as the clock strikes midnight on the Fox 8 HOT LIST site.  Remember: a review or recommendation is not the same as a vote, but we do really appreciate both reviews or recommendations as well as your votes!

Something New Entertainment voted one of the Beacon’s Best 2009!

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

Each year, the Akron Beacon Journal and Ohio.com take nominations for the "Beacon's Best" list -- a list of the very best of the best of Akron businesses in categories from restaurants and banquet halls, to beauty salons, spas, auto repair, attorneys, etc., as well as -- you guessed it -- entertainment companies and disc jockey companies!!!  Once the nominations are in, votes are cast by clients and readers just like you to see which companies will earn a place as one of the Beacon's Best.

We are pleased and humbled to announce that Something New Entertainment Bridal DJ Service has been voted one of the Beacon's Best 2009, especially because we did not even know that we had been nominated!  As you probably know, we are very dedicated to our brides and grooms, and since the nominations for this award happen in late August with the voting beginning in September -- smack in the middle of our busiest season -- we don't campaign for these awards by sending out flyers or e-mails, because we believe it is more important to devote that time and energy to our clients.    So, obviously -- WOW -- it was a BIG surprise to get that phone call!

For all of those Something New Entertainment Bridal DJ Service past clients and fans who nominated us and voted for us (without even being asked!): thank you so much for this award!  We are so grateful to have such loyal friends in the community.  It is extremely gratifying to know that we made a difference in your lives on such an important day, and we don't take your ratings, reviews, or praise lightly.  You guys are the best, and we intend to keep rocking your weddings, parties, proms, dances, and bar/bat mitzvahs for many years to come!
