If you missed out on visiting the Something New Entertainment Staff Tuesday evening, at the debut Handpicked | a Different Kind of Bridal Event, you missed out on an amazing experience! Fortunately, pics are in for your vicarious viewing pleasure from two of our very talented team of professional archivers — Dennis Crider of Dennis Crider Photography and Tara Carman of Carman and Pugh Photography. You can link to our Facebook Fan page to see a larger album including several fan snapshots!
Ever since we were literally Hand-Picked for this event, we’ve been excited. This event was a long time in the making. Now that we’ve finally put this event “to bed,” we’re excited about next year! You will be, too, after you check out these hand-picked shots from our styled-shoot-meets-bridal-show that people are calling the “best bridal show, ever.” Yep — it was epic!
For starters — there were ACTUALLY s’mores! One of the many delicious delights served up by Totally Cooked Catering, who also handled bar service for the event.
Handpicked was conceived to be a more-than-your-average bridal show — if you’re looking for free tee-shirts, spin-the-wheel discounts, flashing lights, an a bajillion vendors all (loudly) competing for your attention and pressuring you that this deal is good TODAY ONLY, there are plenty of opportunities for that — Handpicked was created to be a more enjoyable sensory experience with low pressure, fun, and plenty of opportunities to become immersed in a beautifully-styled event.
One of the most special parts of Handpicked was undoubtedly the many opportunities for Brides and Grooms to get a little pampering — through style consultations with Katherine Werre of J. Hilburn custom men’s clothier, eye makeup demonstrations and mini makeup consults with Maggie Kleinman of MKleinmanArtistry, Hair Consults with Jamie (Sophia Jaxon Hair Studio) and Hayley (Studio H) of Sola Salons, and an opportunity to try on couture gowns from Something White | a Bridal Boutique.
Guests also had the opportunity for intensive Q&As with several pros, including Leah Nowak of Cleveland Boudoir (one of the most recognized boudoir photographers in the country, and certainly an expert in her field on helping ladies look and feel their very best!).
We thought about a variety of different considerations in our lighting design for this event, and we employed a number of different strategies: a custom-cut gobo creating a lighted monogram of Handpicked’s signature “H” for the stone dance floor; judicious use of some of the venue’s existing lighting in both house light form and in a rep plot for the stage; bistro-style string globe lights draped for accent and soft illumination; and uplighting in a soft pink to bring out the warm tones in the wood of the farmhouse tables and emphasize the architecture of the pillars in the main hall, a warm orangey-red to brighten up the dark walls and create a “pop” for the wedding cake, and a royal blue to give depth to the stage area — a black velvet drape can really flatten out, without a little lighting; as well as “practical” lighting to really brighten up a few areas in need of high-visibility: a makeup station, and two different photography galleries, to be precise.
Baci Designer definitely gave us plenty of inspiration to work with, too — from the beginning of the production process, we exchanged inspiration photos and ideas — colors, textures, and more.
The setup at Happy Days Lodge included a Ceremony Area on the Stage, complete with a hand-painted kraft backdrop (featuring the Handpicked | a Different Kind of Bridal Event shield), supported by a simple but elegant repurposed coat rack from Borrow Vintage + Eclectic Rentals topped by a woodland-themed arrangement by Molly Taylor Designs and carefully lit with royal blue (darkened by the black velvet backdrape) uplighting from behind and contrasting color-corrective theatrical wash lighting from the front by Something New Entertainment.
The stone dance floor below the stage bore a dramatic custom-cut lighted monogram gobo with the event’s signature “H.”
The “altar” was surrounded with Borrow Vintage + Eclectic Rentals’ teak folding chairs, decorated with draped tartan in the event colors — Navy, Red, Greed, and Gold — tied with twine and embellished with a sprig of evergreenery. Framing the stage were two small evergreen bushes. This Ceremony setup would be suitable not only for a ceremony on this stage, but on Happy Days Lodge’s covered sun porch, or even outdoors on a sunny, warm day.
In this area, we created a bistro-style string globe light curtain draped from another repurposed Borrow Vintage + Eclectic Rentals Coat Rack. Behind the light curtain, we mixed in some harvest orange uplighting to warm up the dark, dark brown walls and finished the scene with some targeted pinspotting to give a little pop to the tasty desserts available for sampling! Bittersweet’s also served up custom-imprinted truffles in tiny brown paper boxes as a take-home favor to enjoy while reading over the Handpicked Field Guide.
Something White | a Bridal Boutique is known for it’s elegantly unusual gowns in a variety of lengths, cuts, and colors — some with sleeves, jackets, or vintage style. Their gown display area leading into the Something White Pop-Up Salon Area provided another area-of-interest for some fun lighting effects. We love how absolutely whimsical the combination of soft colors, globe lights, and lace becomes in the photo, below, by Carman and Pugh Photography.
We love seeing the different photographers’ different perspectives and styles. Here’s that same trio of gowns in a cluster of images as shot by Dennis Crider Photography:
