Something New DJs first featured Peek-a-boo Divas on the blog last February after meeting them at the January 2009 Today’s Bride show.  As a former theatrical costume/hair/makeup designer and great admirer particularly of the pin-up art of Alberto Vargas and Gil Elvgren, I was extremely impressed with this dynamic duo’s understanding of not only the hair and fashion of the period, but of the pin-up artists of the 1940s and 1950s’ concept of the sensuality of suggestion, giving Krista and Amy the ability to style and photograph absolutely adorable scenes that celebrate our sexiness without necessarily exposing a lot of skin.

Peek-a-boo Divas has just launched a new service — glamorous and sophisticated boudoir photography in addition to their pin-up style — and they’re offering a reduced introductory session fee for bookings prior to November 15, 2010.  They’re calling it the “Boudoir Special,” so make sure to mention it when you book your session!  For $150, you can book two hours of personalized studio time, use of all studio props, complete hair and makeup (including false eyelashes), full artistic retouching on 10 images and a 3 ½ x 5 print of each of those 10 images.

Amy Howman (Artistic Coordinator) and Krista Burns (Photographer)

Something New Entertainment’s DJ Anna-Jeannine “AJ9” Herman: So — are you two sisters?

Krista Eads Burns & Amy Pratt Howman of Peek-a-boo Divas: Nope! We’ve been asked that about a million times. We’re just great friends and business owners!

DJ AJ9: What sets you apart from other boudoir studios?

Amy: Not only do we offer amazing photos in a relaxed and fun atmosphere, but we also give ladies a full-service salon experience. We take care of the hair and makeup, and we coach each of our ladies through every bit of the process, from outfit selection to posing and expression. You will always be in good hands.

Krista: I think the fact that Amy does all of our hair and makeup really sets us apart from other studios. Everything about your photo shoot is taken care of in house, so there’s no need to worry about booking a hair appointment the day of your shoot. Also, I think the post production artwork on our pin-up work really sets us apart.

DJ AJ9: What is the most important consideration women should make when hiring a boudoir photographer?

Krista: I think it really comes down to your level of comfort with your boudoir photographer. Boudoir photographs are very intimate, and you need to be able to express yourself but still be completely comfortable in your surroundings.

Amy: I think it’s also important for ladies to be up front with their photographer as to their wants, needs and expectations so that all of those are met.  Because we service ladies not only through photos, but also with hair and makeup, it’s important that you have a clear idea of who you want to be made into that day, or be comfortable with who the professionals choose to make you into.

DJ AJ9: What are some ways women can prepare to help ensure better photos?

Krista: Take the time to pamper yourself! Boudoir photos are the perfect time to splurge on a mani/pedi and new lingerie. The prettier you feel walking into our studio, the better you’ll feel in front of the lens, guaranteed!

Amy: And they also need to stop obsessing about those last 10 pounds or the stretch marks on their thighs!  We are human and not perfect in any way, so start loving your body for what it is before your shoot and you won’t be so self-conscious about it on the day of your shoot.

DJ AJ9: What’s your favorite “must capture” shot?

Krista: For our new boudoir line, I really love capturing little details that he loves about you. That’s what makes boudoir photos so special.

Amy: I really love the true essence of pin-up so I am really biased when it comes to a “must capture” shot, but I’m always looking for the traditional pin-up pose with a modern twist.

DJ AJ9: How would you describe your photographic style?

Krista: We LOVE photographing women and showing their true Diva! We love to photograph and create pin-up images, reflecting the hand drawn look of pin-up girls circa 1940’s. In addition, we’re REALLY excited to announce the addition of our Boudoir Line. Our Boudoir Line is all about YOU, showing your best assets in a tasteful way that will make your significant other’s jaw drop. It makes the perfect bridal gift for your groom.

Amy: I would say we are constantly evolving – we are always looking for new ways to improve what we do and make our products better.  We are very open with our Divas and welcome all of their thoughts and suggestions – they have truly helped us become the studio we are today!

DJ AJ9: What first interested you in pin-up photography?

Krista: I’ve always loved art and have been drawing and painting since I was a little kid. I went to college for my bachelor’s in Studio Art with an emphasis on photography at the University of Akron, and things have just taken off from there!

Amy: I have always been intrigued by the 40’s and 50’s era and being a curvier woman I really have an appreciation for the models from those eras.  I think pin-up is really the only photography out there that truly can capture a woman as who she really is and who she really wants to be.

DJ AJ9: How long have you been creating pin-ups?

Krista: Amy came to me about four years ago wanting pin-up style photos done for her husband as a Christmas present. I had done all kinds of photography by then, but never pin-ups. We put our heads together and came up with some great ideas, and we ended up doing our first photo shoot in my kitchen! We ended up with enough images to create a calendar. Once she started showing it to her friends and family, the word started spreading about our pin-ups. We officially opened our studio doors this past March, and haven’t looked back!

DJ AJ9: What do you enjoy most about working with and photographing women?

Krista: I really enjoy seeing our ladies realize that they ARE sexy. Most women come into the photo shoot a little apprehensive, but by about the middle of the shoot, you can see a light go off when they truly realize they ARE beautiful and worth every second of their photo shoot. That, to me, makes my job totally worthwhile.

Amy: No matter how sexy and beautiful a woman is they always seem to have one or two insecurities about themselves or their bodies.  It’s very satisfying to help women overcome some of their insecurities and see just how amazing they truly are.

Since 2007, a shared passion for the whimsical pinup photography of the Forties and Fifties led friends Krista Burns and Amy Howman to begin experimenting with crafting their own unique pin ups and Peek-A-Boo Divas was born!

From the initial design consultation to the actual photoshoot and post work, each handcrafted photographic Peek-A-Boo Diva image is a truly unique work of art. Blending the whimsy and fun of the Golden Age of Cheesecake with a sexy, modern twist, Peek-A-Boo Divas brings out the sex kitten in every woman. Ranging from sweetly sexy or seriously sizzling, each photo shoot is carefully catered to the taste and comfort level of the individual client, ensuring that the final product will be a source of delight both for the new Diva and any beau lucky enough to be granted a glimpse.
