Country Chic Nuptials at Brookside Farms

Update: this event is now featured on the Knot’s Real Weddings!

We first met Chelsea in person at the Boutique Bridal Bazaar, and from that first meeting, it was obvious that we shared a strong connection.  The next week, we made plans to get together for coffee with her and her then-fiance, Jon, to learn more about their plans for their perfect wedding day at Brookside Farms.

By the week after that, we were well on our way to planning what turned out to be one of the most spiritual, emotional, romantic, and FUN events I have ever had the privilege to MC.  It was an event that honored not only their love for each other, but their love for their friends and family and their joy in the union of two “tribes,” and there was soooooo much style.  If you know me, you know I dearly love both of those components: love and style.

On Sunday, August 10, 2015, the sun rose on an absolutely perfect summer day for Jon and Chelsea’s wedding.  To set the stage, Chelsea and Jon’s Family created some impressive decor — including a wooden pergola with doors bearing the inscription “What God has joined together let no man separate — Mark 10:9” as well as a massive wooden cross.  Little tree-trunk pillars branded with the couple’s initials lined the aisle, bearing little bouquets of baby’s breath.

After their ceremony, featuring live music by several musical friends, guests moved up the small hill to the main barn for cocktail hour while the bridal party took some formal portraits around the grounds.

The bride, Chelsea, had made much of the decor with her own very crafty hands.  On the day of the event, a wedding planner friend-of-the-family came down to assist with getting some of the details in place artfully during a time when the bride was obviously unavailable since she was getting ready, herself.

Hiring a wedding planner or day-of-coordinator is a GREAT approach for any couples who are crafty and love DIY decor but who want to keep their stress level LOW on the way of the event.

Chelsea and Jon had originally planned on a static-cling-type monogram for their dancefloor which they had ordered online.  Their event planner realized that the plastic would not adhere to the rough, wooden barn floor, though.  Luckily, the Something New Team was able to improvise and come up with something even better for them — a beautiful lighted monogram.

Chelsea’s family has used one of the Vendors We Adore for special occasion flowers for a long time, and her wedding day was no exception.  All of the florals are by Molly Taylor Designs.

As the couple and their bridal party returned from formal portraits, Jon and Chelsea chose kick off the festivities with personalized introductions.  Their bridal party included:

Johnny, Jon’s friend from Bible Study Group
Katie, Chelsea’s friend from 4th Grade Basketball
Nate, Jon’s college roommate
Joey, Jon’s brother
Madison and Shelby, Chelsea’s Sisters

We helped Jon and Chelsea put together some brief words about each of them to help others get to know the bridal party and to honor the special friendships each of them share with the bride and groom.  For the soundtrack, Jon and Chelsea chose “Happy” by Pharrell.

I have to note that this was an extremely well-stated and thoughtful group of speeches– sometimes funny, thought-provoking, and sentimental.  Just the perfect mix of blessings for Jon and Chelsea’s wedding day.

Just before their First Dance, we honored Jon and Chelsea’s romance through a telling of their “Love Story” — and what a Love Story it is.

I’ll share just a very little bit of it, here, because their proposal story is especially, especially adorable.  It’s a story about how even an engagement that isn’t strictly a “surprise” can still be really surprising!

After just a few weeks of dating, Chelsea and Jon were already talking about marriage, and a little over a year after they first met, they began designing an engagement ring together.  Jon made Chelsea wait for it, though; he didn’t “pop the question” until nearly three months later.

One day, Jon planned an impromptu picnic dinner for Chelsea…

After the lovely picnic dinner… Jon wanted to go for a hike to Blue Hen Falls where they had hiked on one of their very first dates. At the falls, Jon put his camera on video mode and asked Chelsea to pose for a photo by the falls with him. Then, he dropped to one knee, pulled out a beautiful engagement ring that they had designed together, and he said:

“Take my hand, and make me the happiest man in the world.”

Chelsea replied “YES” with a big hug and kiss before shouting: “I AM ENGAGED!!!” at the top of her lungs.

It’s great when clients let us write their Love Story, because a carefully-crafted Love Story presentation can really allow all the guests to feel that warm, romantic glow right along with the couple, as they dance.  It’s a shared experience during this special moment that goes far beyond what guests are expecting from the “average” wedding reception.

For her dance with her Dad, Doug, Chelsea chose the ever-classic “Butterfly Kisses” by Bob Carlisle.

For his dance with his Mom, Jon chose one of my personal favorites — “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts.  ^^Isn’t this just the most gorgeous dress?

Afterwards, Chelsea did a quick bouquet toss before we got to have a little fun with the guys during the garter toss.  Jon had planned a funny surprise for the removal, itself, and then we had the guys do a little dance-off action before Jon agreed to toss the garter.

  1. Doug (Dad)

Wow, what a wonderful and emotional recap. A perfect day in every way. Made special by a couple that is meant to share a loving life together, decorations and preparation that was inspiring and a glimpse of the creativity and genius of Michelle (Mom) and “Smoking Joe”‘ (Dad Bobnar), and the friends and family that joined us to celebrate. Jon and Chelsea are 9 months into a lifetime of love and sharing, their relationship and commitment to each other and the God we serve is a model for very young couple. We love you both and thank you to the friends and family that shared in this wonderful event. Love Doug (Dad)
