I (DJ AJ9) first met Ann King of Borrow Vintage + Eclectic Rentals, in person, during setup for the EPIC Handpicked | a Different Kind of Bridal Event, this past November (2013), but — I’ll confess — I’ve been involved in an absolutely inappropriate and positively scandalous love affair with her “Large Leather Trunk” and “Bluebird Settee” since they were featured in a Baci Designer styled shoot on Style Me Pretty, back in February of 2013.
Then, in March, several of Borrow’s pieces were featured in the Something White (a Bridal Boutique) “Look Book” (also styled by Baci Designer).
While modern rentals certainly have their place, many Something New Entertainment brides planning an event with a vintage flair are seeking something a little out-of-the-ordinary. To be candid, the Northeast Ohio Bridal Market has had a notable hole since Hodge Podge Vintage Rentals closed (sometime in 2012?), and Borrow Vintage + Eclectic Rentals has stepped up to the plate to more than fill that gap with not only an exciting inventory of awesome vintage seating, tables, large and small accessories (such as boxes, barrels, shutters, suitcases, frames, vases, etc.), and even dinnerware, but with a knowledgeable curator at the helm — Ann King.
Ann is a breath of fresh air, if ever there was one, too. She’s smart, witty, and passionate about her work. After extensive research chatting her up at Handpicked, the Boutique Bridal Bazaar, and in association with our upcoming event (Supa Fresh), I have come to the conclusion that I like Ann herself even better than her Bluebird Settee! 🙂 Just look at it; that’s high praise, indeed.
Something New Entertainment’s DJ Anna-Jeannine “AJ9” Herman: What first interested you in vintage and eclectic styled furniture and entertaining accessories?
Ann King of Borrow Vintage + Eclectic Rentals: I have always loved vintage one-of-kind furniture as well as design. My husband’s family who have a long history in interior design have been kind enough to show me the ins and outs of purchasing consignment and by auction. I’ve been obsessed with “the Hunt” ever since. When a good friend and wedding planner in California (Lindsay of LVL Events) suggested I start a rental company I was beyond excited and so it began.
DJ AJ9: How long have you been providing rentals for weddings?
Ann King of Borrow Vintage + Eclectic Rentals: I started in 2012 with smaller events such as wedding and baby showers. This past season was my first real season engrossed in weddings and we LOVED it.
DJ AJ9: How would you describe your shop’s style?
Ann King of Borrow Vintage + Eclectic Rentals: We are an eclectic mix of rustic, industrial, vintage, french and classic americana. The list can keep going… so I guess the one word answer here is “Eclectic.”
DJ AJ9: What do you enjoy most about curating vintage and eclectic pieces for rental?
Ann King of Borrow Vintage + Eclectic Rentals: There is nothing more I love more than standing back and seeing all the pieces come together to create a beautiful event. It is a very proud day to please and impress our clients 🙂
DJ AJ9: What is the most important consideration couples should make when hiring a chair, table, or accessory rental company for their wedding?
Ann King of Borrow Vintage + Eclectic Rentals: Customer Service + Quality of product. All rentals are not created equal and it is important to see the product in person and to understand where it came from and how it’s taken care of.
DJ AJ9: What are some ways that couples can prepare for their wedding day to help ensure smooth sailing with coordinating a rental?
Ann King of Borrow Vintage + Eclectic Rentals: Make contact very early on into your wedding planning process. The best inventory does get booked quickly! Also we always suggest having a sit-down with us at our warehouse to book your items. We offer every client free styling and design suggestions at the initial meeting so it is great to take advantage!
DJ AJ9: You were recently involved in Handpicked | a Different Kind of Bridal Event. What was your favorite part of the Borrowed Vintage + Eclectic Rentals design for that event?
Ann King of Borrow Vintage + Eclectic Rentals: I loved the two King’s tables we put together with Baci Designer and Molly Taylor Designs. The Blue Bird Settee as the seating for Bride + Groom was my fave.
DJ AJ9: What do you look for in a great DJ and what are your DJ pet peeves? How can your DJ “co-workers” help you, hurt you, or irritate you throughout the day?
Ann King of Borrow Vintage + Eclectic Rentals: I look for DJs who play music from current great bands (Mumford and Sons etc.) [They can irritate me by playing] the cheesy “wedding music” too much! I also love DJs who can curate a music selection based on a clients specific likes. Think the real live person version of Pandora! I also love working with vendors who want to work with other vendors to help create a amazing event for our clients. You guys were the prime example of that- lending us your wire hooks for the hanging of one of our cage lights. We love working as part of a team with other vendors!
About Borrow Vintage + Eclectic Rentals and Ann King:
We are a custom rental house supplying up-cycled wood tables and eclectic furniture serving Northern Ohio.
I’ve always prided myself in discovering uniqueness in otherwise overlooked places. Whether it’s an up-cycled or used table, a piece of writing, a unique shop or a business venture, my heart has always felt most at home in the “out of the ordinary.” When a dear friend came to me and proposed that I start a rental business and rent out my assortment of unique and beautiful furniture finds for weddings and events, I felt an immediate connection and my eclectic collection expanded beyond my personal furnishings to a warehouse full of treasures.
I’ve combined my passion for discovering the out of the ordinary with my dedication to customer service and business ownership. In doing so I’ve created a warm and friendly space to imagine a wedding or event that combines high style, a sense of humor and love.
